Two university students pursuing Education Arts degrees have landed themselves in hot water after being arrested for impersonating senior officials of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and soliciting bribes.
The suspects, identified as Tobias Singila Wekesa (23) and Sharon Nanjala Anyango (26), were apprehended on Tuesday at a National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) office in Bungoma County. They had allegedly raided the office under the pretense of conducting official investigations into NG-CDF projects.
According to reports, the pair demanded bribes from the officials, threatening to impose sanctions if their demands were not met. Wekesa falsely presented himself as the Director of the fictitious “EACC Kakamega County,” while Anyango assumed the title of “Director at EACC Nairobi.”
Their scheme unraveled when the targeted officials became suspicious and reported the incident. The duo was subsequently arrested and is currently in custody at Bungoma Central Police Station, awaiting further legal processing.
This incident highlights the lengths some individuals are willing to go in an attempt to exploit public offices for personal gain. It also underscores the importance of vigilance and due diligence when dealing with individuals claiming to represent official organizations.
The EACC has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrests. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face charges for impersonation and corruption-related offenses.
